Most mattresses last 7 to 10 years, but the real answer depends on what’s inside, how well it was made and how you look after it, especially in Singapore’s heat and humidity. Here’s how long a mattress lasts by type, the signs it’s time for a new one, and simple ways to make yours last longer.

The quick answer
- Bonnell spring: about 5 to 7 years
- Foam and memory foam: about 7 to 10 years
- Pocket spring and hybrid: about 8 to 10 years
- Natural latex: about 10 to 15 years
These are typical ranges for good-quality mattresses used every night. A cheaper mattress, a heavier load or poor care can shorten them.
How long each type of mattress lasts
| Type | Typical lifespan | What wears out first | Our examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonnell spring | 5–7 years | Linked coils lose tension and start to creak | Budget and guest-room mattresses |
| High-density foam | 7–10 years | Foam softens where you sleep most | Dorme Firmhaven, Dorme Flexfoam |
| Memory foam | 7–10 years | Body impressions that stay after you get up | Dorme Grandluxe |
| Pocket spring | 8–10 years | Comfort layers on top compress before the springs | Dorme Cloudform |
| Hybrid | 8–10+ years | Comfort layers, slowly; springs keep their support | Nuloft Hybrid, Nuloft Luxe |
| Natural latex | 10–15 years | Very little; latex springs back for years | The Nuloft, Nuloft Orthofirm |

7 signs you need a new mattress
- A dip or sag where you sleep, deeper than about 2.5cm, that doesn’t spring back.
- You wake up stiff or sore and feel better after you’ve been up for a while.
- You sleep better elsewhere, in a hotel or a guest room.
- You feel your partner move more than you used to.
- Springs creak or poke through the top.
- Allergies or a musty smell that don’t improve after cleaning. Old mattresses collect dust mites and moisture.
- It’s over 8 years old and you’re not sure. Age alone isn’t a reason, but it’s worth checking for the signs above.
Why mattresses wear faster in Singapore
Heat and humidity are hard on mattresses. Sweat and moisture soak into the top layers every night, foam softens faster when it’s warm, and a mattress that can’t dry out can start to smell musty or grow mould. Here’s what helps:
- Use a mattress protector. A breathable, water-resistant protector like the Nuloft Ice Silk Mattress Protector stops sweat and spills from reaching the mattress, and it’s easy to wash.
- Let it breathe. Pull back the covers for an hour in the morning, and keep the room ventilated or run the air-con on dry mode now and then.
- Choose a base that breathes. Slatted bed frames let air reach the underside of the mattress. If you have a solid storage base, air the mattress more often.
- Pick cooler materials. Latex and pocket springs let more air through than solid foam. See our cooling mattress guide.

How to make your mattress last longer
- Rotate it head to foot every 3 months for the first year, then every 6 months. Most modern mattresses are one-sided, so rotate, don’t flip.
- Support it properly. A sagging or uneven base wears a mattress out unevenly. See our bed frame and mattress pairing guide.
- Don’t sit on the edge in the same spot every day, and keep kids from jumping on the bed.
- Clean it every few months: vacuum the top, spot-clean stains with a little mild soap and water, and let it dry fully.
- Keep the plastic off. Plastic wrap traps moisture. Remove it as soon as your mattress arrives.
Does a longer warranty mean a longer-lasting mattress?
It’s a good clue. A warranty tells you how long the maker expects the mattress to hold its support without defects. All Nuloft mattresses come with a 10-year warranty, and Nuloft Singapore sizes also come with a 100-night trial, so you can sleep on one at home before you decide.
A warranty covers manufacturing defects, like sagging beyond a set depth. It doesn’t cover normal softening, stains or damage, which is another reason to use a protector.

FAQ
How often should you replace your mattress?
Most people should replace their mattress every 7 to 10 years. Latex mattresses can last 10 to 15 years, while Bonnell spring mattresses usually need replacing after 5 to 7 years.
Can a mattress last 20 years?
It’s rare. Even a well-made latex mattress usually softens and wears after 15 years, and an old mattress collects dust mites and moisture. If yours is that old, check it for sagging and comfort.
Which type of mattress lasts the longest?
Natural latex lasts the longest, often 10 to 15 years, followed by good-quality hybrids and pocket spring mattresses.
Should I flip or rotate my mattress?
Rotate it head to foot every 3 to 6 months. Most modern mattresses have comfort layers on one side only, so they shouldn’t be flipped.
Do you take away my old mattress?
Yes. When we deliver your new mattress, we’ll take away one old mattress free for each new one you buy. A few special-price mattresses are excluded, and their product page will say so.
