A wooden bed frame is sturdy, quiet and lasts for years, and it suits almost any bedroom, from a Japandi HDB to a warm, classic condo. But “wooden” covers a lot: solid American oak, Hevea wood and pine all look, feel and cost differently, and the base underneath matters as much as the wood. Here’s how to choose a wooden bed frame in Singapore: the types of wood, slats vs a flat base, prices, and how to care for wood in our humid weather.

The quick answer

  • Solid American oak is the sturdiest and most premium choice, with a rich grain. Queen from about $629.
  • Hevea wood (also called rubberwood) is a sustainable hardwood that takes paint well, so it comes in more colours. Queen from about $499.
  • Pine is light and affordable, with a natural knotty grain. Great for smaller rooms and Japan sizes, from $199.
  • Slats let the mattress breathe; a flat plywood base gives even support for any mattress.

Slats or a flat base?

Slats help your mattress breathe in Singapore’s humidity; a flat base gives even support for any mattress type.

Wooden slats leave gaps between the boards, so air can reach the underside of your mattress. In Singapore’s humidity, that helps the mattress stay fresh and dry. Our oak and pine beds use slats, with extra centre support on the larger designs.

A flat plywood base gives a solid, even surface that supports foam, latex and spring mattresses equally well, and it won’t leave gaps for smaller items to fall through. Clementine, Kenni, Reese and Almasy have a flat plywood base. If your bed has a solid base, air your mattress more often: pull back the covers in the morning and let it breathe.

Caring for a wooden bed in Singapore’s humidity

  • Wipe, don’t soak. Dust with a soft, dry cloth. For marks, use a slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away.
  • Keep it out of strong sun. Direct sunlight can fade or dry out the wood over time.
  • Keep air moving. A ventilated room, or running the air-con on dry mode now and then, helps keep wood and mattress dry.
  • Check the joints once or twice a year and tighten any bolts that have loosened, especially after moving the bed.
  • Use felt pads under the legs to protect your floor.

Which mattress for a wooden bed?

Match the mattress size to the bed size exactly: our wooden beds come in Singapore, Japan or UK sizes depending on the design, and each needs its matching mattress. Nuloft Lite, The Nuloft, Nuloft Hybrid, Nuloft Luxe and Nuloft Orthofirm all come in Singapore, Japan and UK sizes. Our bed frame and mattress pairing guide explains how to choose, and our Japanese bed frame guide covers Japan sizes in detail.

FAQ

Which wood is best for a bed frame?

Solid American oak is the sturdiest and longest-lasting choice. Hevea wood is a good-value hardwood that comes in more painted colours, and pine is light and affordable for smaller rooms.

Is Hevea wood the same as rubberwood?

Yes. Hevea wood comes from the rubber tree. It’s a sustainable hardwood, because the trees are used after they stop producing latex.

Are wooden bed frames good in humid weather?

Yes, with a little care. Choose a slatted base so your mattress can breathe, keep the room ventilated, and wipe the wood with a dry cloth rather than a wet one.

Do wooden bed frames squeak?

A well-made wooden frame is very quiet. If it starts to creak, it’s usually a loose bolt: tighten the joints once or twice a year, especially after moving the bed.

How long does delivery take?

Many of our wooden beds are in stock and deliver in about 5 working days. Each product page shows its delivery time.
